Parallel Perspectives • パラレル パースペクティブ



Last night I went to the opening party of Parallel Perspectives, a solo exhibition of Australian Artist Lyn Derrick at JARFO in Kyoto.

昨日、リン・デリックパラレル・パースペクティブの個人展を立ち寄りました。京都のJARFOさんで初日パーティーをやってました。

Lyn Derrick started her degree in Fine art at the Brisbane Institute of Art at the age of 52, and in this exhibition, we're lucky enough to see paintings, sculpture and installation, which is above and beyond what I expected. Her paintings are especially wonderful, bringing back memories of wonderful Australian beaches.

リンさんはオーストラリアのブリズベン・インスティチュート・オブ・アートで52歳の時勉強を始まりました。この展示で絵・彫刻(金属加工術)・インスタレーションを見えます。僕の期待よりはば広かった。とっても不思議でした。特に彼女の絵はすばらしかった。オーストラリアのビーチを思い出した。

Personal Circles • パーソナルサークルズ



On right now is a collaborative exhibition we've been organizing with itohen; "Personal Circles".
今週から私たちといとへんの企画展「パーソナルサークルズ」が始まりました。

The 5 artists featured will exhibit sketches of their own personal circles; things directly in their personal lives. The list of international guests with different academic backgrounds makes it a must see for anyone interested in either 1) the range of technical approaches to sketching to see, or 2) the relations the artists have with their own 'personal circles', and the comparisons that can be made between the participants.

参加者5人は自分の身の回りの世界(=Personal Circle)のスケッチを展示します。国際の様々参加者の学歴も違いますから、1)技術的アプローチと 2)参加者と身の回りの世界の関係と他の参加者と比べること、この二つのことに興味ある人々は是非見に来て下さい。

Personal Circles will be held at iTohen from Nov 4 Wed ~ Nov 15 Sun (11:00~18:00, closed on Mon, Tue).
パーソナルサークルズはいとへんで 11月4日(水)〜 11月15日(11:00~18:00、月・火休み)

There is also a silkscreen printing workshop @ OOO on the 7th of Nov, where participants are invited to screen print the various members artworks onto their own items of clothing, (or bags, or whatever!). All you can print for ¥3,000. I'll be helping out with that, so come along!

11月7日はシルクスクリーンのワークショップを行います。自分のシャツ、バッグ何でもに作品を印刷するつもり。¥3000でシルクスクリーンする放題。僕は手伝いますので、是非!

Also Ross Siu will be holding a sketch workshop on the 8th at Itohen in the afternoon. After his workshop is the reception party, which everyone is invited to come along to. Network, and expand your own personal circle.

8日、いとへんでロスさんはワークショップを行います。そのあとはパーティですので、ネットワーキングをして、自分の回りの世界に入っている人々を増やせましょう。

FLAG 001! (Foreigner's Live Art Guide • 外国人のためのライブアートガイド)



We've been breaking our backs at OOO to get FLAG ready for July/Aug, and finally: It's out!
And yes so is my late-ass blog entry.

私たち過酷な労働を行って7/8月のためにFLAGを用意して、やっと:出来上がりました!
そう、オレのブログ入力も遅い。

FLAG stands for Foreigner's Live Art Guide. As you probably know, there's very little information about art and galleries in Osaka, and what information exists is only found in bits and pieces and all over the place.

『FLAG』っては『Foreigner's Live Art Guide』。たぶんもうご存じのことと思いますが大阪の英語で書いているアート情報はほんとにすくないで、存在しているのはばらばらしている。

We've brought it all together in a bi-monthly free paper including featured FLAGGED exhibitions; an interview with a FLAGGED artist each issue; A baton relay introducing 3 interesting things in Osaka each week and a very easy to follow map, and an exhibition schedule!

2ヶ月1回のフリーペーパーで情報を集めました:FLAGGED展覧会(FLAGGED=ピックアップ)、FLAGGEDアーチストのインタビュー、大阪の面白いことを紹介するバトンリーレー、そして分かりやすい地図+展覧会スケジュール!

You can pick up FLAG from a variety of spots around Osaka (the usual foreigner haunts). Keep your eyes out for it, and if you manage to land yourself a copy, send us feedback! All people who send in feedback go into the draw to win a free ticket to Art Osaka 2009!

Graphic Design Exhibition "sirusi" at Kräf•te • グラフィックデザイン展『sirusi』@クレフテ



From the 5th till Saturday the 27th of June, Kräf•te will be holding the Graphic Design Exhibition "sirusi", which is something definitely worth checking out.

6月5日まら27日まで、クレフテはグラフィックデザイン展『sirusi』を開催しますので、見に行ったら価値がありますよ。

Why? Here's two good reasons: Graphic Design exhibitions are quite rare round here, and this one is of exceptional standards and Kräf•te is not usually open as a gallery, so it's worth the opportunity.

なぜ?はい、2つの良い理由:グラフィックデザイン展は珍しくて、この展の基準は非常に優れたで、クレフテは普通にギャラリーとはやってないからこの機会のも価値あります。

CASO, Osaka-ko • CASO、大阪港



One nice warm March day, I had an appointment out at Cosmos Square (to see a man about a horse). On the way back, I got off the Chuou-sen at Osaka-ko, to visit this place called CASO (Contemporary Art Space Osaka), which I'd heard about before.

3月のすてきで暖かい日、コスモススクエアで用事ありました(『to see a man about a horse』って行き先をはっきり言いたくない場合の代用表現だよ。覚えてね)。帰る道、中央線の大阪港で降りて、聞いたことあるCASOって伺う目的だった。

At first I was supprised at the size of CASO. It's actually very very large, and it's clearly an old warehouse. The gallery itself has with 6 rooms with high ceilings and plenty of wall space. There's also a lounge on the 2nd floor for visitors and exhibitors, with a library and internet access, also used for parties and lectures. CASO is also know as the Kaigandori Gallery • 海岸通ギャラリー.

最初、CASOのサイズにびっくりした。とってもとっても広くて古い倉庫だ。ギャラリーは部屋六つ:高い天井とたくさんの壁面空間。2階には訪問者と出品者のラウンジがあって、ライブラリーとインターネットもパーティと講義のため使われております。CASOは『海岸通ギャラリー』っても呼ばれています。

I went when the Works 23 Exhibition was on, showcasing 23 graduate school students • 大学院生 from the Naruto Kyoiku Daigaku Geijitsu Course • 鳴門教育大学の芸実コース. Splendid stuff all round! There was something so satisfying about seeing some really large canvases; paintings so large they wouldn't fit in most galleries.

行った時『Works 23』の展示をやってまして、鳴門教育大学の芸実コースからの23人の大学院生たちを陳列。すべて見事な作品でした。ほんまにでかいなキャンバスをみるのがなにかな満足感でしたよ:ふつのギャラリーに入らないサイズぐらい。

Busting out the business cards and smiles, I charmed 3 students on guard into letting me take photos.

名刺とスマイルを突然取り出して、見張っていた参加者に魔法をかけて撮影できるようになりました。よし。


Yagi Sogo • 八木聡悟 was a quiet guy who had an absolutely massive painting of a tree, 'gogonoki' (translates roughly as 'the afternoon tree'). He told me that this was his interpretation of an existing one. Flowing lines, liberal amounts of paint; a really raw earthy feel to his work. I was supprised something so intense could come from such a quiet guy.

八木聡悟は本当に静かで『午後の木』と言う完全に大規模な木の絵を作った。存在の木の解釈でした。流れている線、物惜しみしないペンキの量:彼の作品は生で土臭い気分をしました。こんなに静かな人から本格的なもんが生まれてびくりしました。


Sako Yoshihiro • 左古寛博 had the most 3D of all the artworks. His piece comprised of a number of supported foam platforms on which were placed flowers of different colours and insects, all cut from individual pieces of OHP film. I forgot how long it took him to do it.

左古寛博は一番3Dの作品を作りました。たくさんの支えられているプラットホームの上に有色の花々と黒い虫が置いてまして、全部透明フィルムから切りました。どれぐらいかかったって忘れた。


Lastly, just before I left, I spoke to Sakamoto Masaru • 坂本優 about his highly realistic imagery in his paintings. In the photo above, the two pictures on the right are part of a set of 3, exploring a theme of naimen, gaimen • 内面/外面 (or interior/exterior). He portrayed himself in these paintings as well, with the windows between inside and outside sometimes clear, at others not.

最後に坂本優さんと彼の絵の現実的な画像について話をしました。上の写真の右の2つの絵はセット(全部で3つ)に入ってまして、内面/外面のテーマを探検するんです。彼は自分自身を表現して、その内面/外面の窓はときどきクリア、たまに不明瞭。

Anyways, if you're ever in the mood for huge, quiet spaces filled with large pieces of art, then CASO is for you. Even if you're not, you should keep an eye on their schedule, as all kinds of exhibitions pop up, right here in Kansai.

とにかく、広くて静かな空間で大きい絵がある所に気分でしたら、CASOだ。それじゃなくても日程を見て、いろんな展示がでる。Right here! in 関西



Art Area B1, Nakanoshima • アートエリアビーワン、中之島



Just last year Keihan opened up the Nakanoshima Sen • 中之島線 in Osaka city, expanding their line all the way through Nakanoshima. And in Naniwabashi Station, Art Area B1 has opened.

去年京阪電車は大阪市の中之島線を開始して、中之島駅まで拡張しています。なにわ橋駅のアートエリアビーワンも開始しました。

I can only say good things. I really can. I went there on a friends recommendation; and I wasn't just impressed with the Paramodel exhibition, I was awed. There were train tracks EVERYWHERE. All up the pillars, and across the roof, up all the walls, right across the floor, up the windows and even outside in the station on top of the ticket machines (kippu uriba • 切符売り場). Paramodel's "model play" •「模型遊び」style of working (as they call it), is really full blown • 本格的 !

いいことしか言えないです。ホンマに。友だちのおすすめで行って;感動だけではなく、パラモデルの展示を見て畏敬でございました。どのような場所でも電車線路。柱を上って天井を通って、壁も通って床も窓も、アートエリアビーワンのそとで、切符売り場の上にもあったよ、電車線路。パラモデルの『模型遊び』と言う働き方は本格的ですよ!

36 Eyes Exhibition, Itohen • 『三十六の瞳』の展、いとへん



A couple of months ago now, I got myself to Itohen just in time for Vol.2 of the 36 Eyes exhibition, showcasing a selection of independent artists in the Kansai area. And even on a weekday afternoon I was able to meet some of the artists participating in the even and ask them a few questions.

2ヶ月前、(2ヶ月前っておそっ!遅すぎやろうオレ。ブログ遅くなってすまん。)関西にすんでいる独立な画家さんの『三十六の瞳推薦作家展いとへんで見に行きました。平日の午後でも参加していた画家さんを会ったり質問をしました。




Interesting collections of objects imprisoned inside glass cases; not seemingly because they were fragile, but more so because imprisonment seemed the objective of the pieces by Megumi Yamamoto San.

面白い収集物がガラスのはこに投獄している。壊れやすいってよりももっと『投獄』が山本めぐみさんの目的だった。かなぁ。



Masato Takeichi San said that he spends the greater part of the day on a single of his artworks. He draws what appears to be mechanical contraptions with no apparent functionality. The details in his drawings are so fine that you can't see the pencil lines, and the shading is meticulous! Personally, I'd get a headache doing these types drawings, and Takeichi San said he spends a lot of time on them.

武市真人さんは作品で日々の大部分で働いている。機能性がすぐに分からない機械装置の絵を書きます。絵の詳細がすごく細かくて鉛筆の線を本当にみえません、でその絵の陰影極めて注意深いでございます!僕自身これみたいの図面をやると絶対頭いたくなる。武市さんはやっぱりかんなり時間かかるっていいました。



A collection of interesting shapes and gradients of colors seemed to give depth to Yusaku Kubo San's work. With the work below it was like looking at a jungle, or a machine, bronzes and silvers, flowing lines that fill out into hard shapes.

面白い形と色の階調の収集物は久保友作さんの作品を奥行きを加える。この下の作品でジャングルもしかして機会に見えて、青銅と銀色、流れている線が硬い形に膨らませる。あの感じ。


Gallery Shamua, South Osaka • ギャラリーシャムア、南大阪



On Mondays I often find myself wandering around Yotsubashi and the Horie area, which is always full of creative shops. I can't remember where I got the flier, but one particular Monday I found myself in Gallery Shamua, talking to Hitomi Nuno about her exhibition 'Grand Mary'. Hitomi also works in the Zakka on the floor below.

The exhibition featured lots of handsized Temari • てまり comes up in the dictionary as a traditional Japanese Handball game. They're like balls of twine, but each with it's own unique pattern. She said that each one takes quite a while to make, usually the better part of a day. There were also a couple of very nice flip books featuring Temari that Hitomi San had made.

Gallery Shamua is a single room right up on the top floor (4th), and pops up in quite a few blogs. The hallway out the front of the Zakka on the 3rd floor is also a great information resource for all things creative.
