Hinata, Tanimachi 6 Choume •

Proof that even places like Tanimachi 6 (Roku) Choume have their own creative nooks and crannies, Hinata is a great example of the cool hidden places in Osaka.

One rainy April afternoon, I headed there to check out an exhibition by Tomomi Nakashima, who calls herself a 'sweet designer'. I like that title. It accurately describes what she does. More about that exhibition below.

Hinata is a Zakka (variety store), and the owner seems to have a fondness for cats, as is clearly seen in a large selection of the goods. There's a small space in the front of the shop for cups of tea, and a space reserved for exhibitions at the back. The floorboards are creaky, which I liked, and the place is nice and quiet. You feel like you're invited, and not intruding.

Don't rush there if you're not into Zakka. But if you love cats, don't rush anywhere else.

I first met Tomomi Nakashima at OOO's first exhibition last year in April. She was invited to help out during the evening, and designed some cookies for the opening event. They were like little clouds with OOO writen in the middle. I stole a couple, and found them to be very tasty indeed.

This year in April, I got a postcard for her exhibition 「くちびるにあまいうた」 • "A sweet song for your lips", as is seen below. From this distance, you can't see the cookies on the table, so I took a couple of close up shots.

Umbrellas and clouds for a rainy day, of course. I got a guitar and a cat for myself, and the rain pack for my wife, who was delighted with the choice of sweets. Nakashima makes the coolest cookies in Osaka; you should check out her website (here).

I bit the head off the cat first, because that's how I always eat cookies shaped like living creatures. From the head first. Don't laugh, I bet you do too.

If you're there, you might want to check out Hinata's neighbors; there's another Zakka on the left called Carbon and a Wedding Zakka called 07Chocolat on the right, and a ladies hat store across the road.

You know, I used to think Osaka had nothing except Torikizoku and the NOVA MM Center. I'm sure there are a few people out there thinking "Torikizoku?", and more people day by day will be saying "NOVA?" from now.

Yeah, I know. I lived and worked in two boxes, and spent the rest of the time drinking 280yen beers. Well, kind of - I did lots of fun stuff, too, and some cool stuff... I'm getting away from the point here!

The other icons, the BLUE ones, represent places that I have still to go to. They're also cool, because all the information you need is in there: names, websites, addresses. If you're feeling keen, you can beat me there and tell me what it was like. I'll be so jealous.

You know what else is cool about the Tsunagari D Google Map? You can get an RSS feed from the map.

RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication, and is a web feed format that is used to follow regularly updated online content (like blogs and stuff). This blog also has it's own RSS feed link on the right hand column (down the bottom). If you haven't got a RSS reader setup, I would recommend it; the RSS reader delivers all updates from your favorite blogs into one place. Personally, I used Google Reader. Wikipedia's entry on what an RSS feed is can be found here.

So why do you want an RSS feed from the Tsunagari D Google Map? Quite simple: every time I update it, your RSS Reader will let you know what's been updated. You can literally follow all the places I'm pasting into the map with efficiency and ease: I'm like your personal Kansai tour guide. I do all the work, and you sit back and watch the updates with ease.

I can guarantee I'm the only one doing this in English. Also possibly in Japanese too. Why? Because I've looked! I've searched, and it took me a while before I just faced that it's just me doing this. There's lots of video content of Osaka on youtube, and lots of pictures on Flickr... but few blogs on Kansai and none on creative stuff.

Neon Addict •

Last year an awesome book came out called Neon Addict; put together by ASYL in Tokyo, and translated by Hiromi Nishi and yours truely.

Neon Addict features 16 pages from 8 different individuals or groups of designers, including Adapter, Alexander Gelman, Keiichiro Oshima, Eriko Hoashi, Namaiki, Atsui Kikuchi, collect.apply (yeah! Go Kansai!), and ASYL.

collect.apply are based in Kyoto by the way. Represent!
ところでcollect.applyは京都本拠地。

Each group was allowed to use up to 5 plates, and had to choose from Pantone's fluro range; be prepared for fluro pinks, metalic silvers and livid yellows.

Check it out!

Paper Voice, South Osaka •

Paper Voice is the gallery & showroom of Heiwa Paper. Their Osaka office is a short walk from Subway Nagahorie Station, where you can browse and purchase awesome paper and check out their gallery.

The reason I like Paper Voice is because it's one of the few galleries around that focuses more on Design rather than art. It's just cause I'm a Graphic Designer; that's the only reason I'm biased. Last year I went there to see Helmut Schmid give a lecture on the foundations of swiss typography.

A single room gallery with a high rotation of events; check out their event calendar here. Cool stuff for Graphic Designers in Kansai!

Yokoji Hamburger •

All I have to do is mention that this place serves BEER, and that should make you run there. Yokoji Hamburger, a great place to chow down on original burgers in Kansai!

I mean, check this out: MENU

The only place to get a good burger for miles around. At Yokoji, your patty is made when you order it (I could smell mine frying while I waited), which ensures it comes out piping hot and juicy. Burgers are served on NICE BREAD! The staff give you the sauce separately with a spoon, so you can put just how much you want on your burger. The spoon is such a NICE gesture! It's also good for clearing up the bits that fall out; other restaurants you have to use your fingers.

I enjoyed my burger at Yokoji, and I'll be going back there for more. A one store shop, only here in Osaka, Kansai!

Did I mention they serve BEER?
